Details of Schubert Britten House Party in the New Forest

For four days in July we are again invading the Woodlands Lodge Hotel, a 3-star country house hotel beautifully situated 3 miles from Lyndhurst in the New Forest. As in previous years, I have also reserved ‘overflow’ rooms in the smaller and slightly more expensive Terra Vina Hotel, just 200 yards from Woodlands Lodge, where we shall be dining on the Wednesday. Following Schumann and Mendelssohn last July, our composers-in-residence are Schubert and Britten – a pairing of which Britten, who loved Schubert above all other composers, would have approved. As usual, the focus will be on chamber music, including Schubert’s ‘Death and the Maiden’ Quartet and his String Quintet – a desert island work for many – and Britten’s First and Third String Quartets. We shall hear solo piano music by Schubert, plus a selection of songs by both composers.  There will also be music by Britten’s revered teacher Frank Bridge, whose idiom was influenced not only by Elgar and Vaughan Williams but also by contemporary French composers.
While the singer is still TBC, our distinguished players are my pianist partner-in-crime Daniel Tong, familiar to most of you, and the Elias Quartet, who have taken part in several of my music events, most recently the Beethoven House Party in 2015. Besides being superb musicians, they are also great company. On the Wednesday we shall be joined by cellist Alice Neary, again, familiar to many of you.
Each day will include study sessions, with ample time for discussion, and (except for the first day) two concerts. The programme will allow time for strolls in the hotel garden or in the New Forest, reached via a garden gate, and/or visits to nearby Beaulieu, with its famous motor museum, and the unique eighteenth-century maritime village of Bucklers Hard. After dinner, those so inclined will be able to join the now-renowned Woodlands Festival Chorus in Schubert partsongs.
