Details of St Matthew Passion in Oxford

A number of you have asked me whether I would be reviving the Bach Passion events I used to run in Cambridge. While I shall return to King’s College Chapel in the future, next April I have chosen a performance of the St Matthew Passion in Merton College Chapel, Oxford, on Passion Sunday: arguably the greatest of all sacred works performed in one of Oxford’s oldest and most beautiful buildings. The professional orchestra and solo team are complemented by the Merton College Choir, among Oxford’s finest mixed-voice choirs, and the Merton College Girls’ Choir.
On the Saturday we shall hear Music for Lamentation in Merton Chapel from the superb Marian Consort, in a programme that mixes familiar masterpieces by Tallis and Allegri with music of the Portuguese Renaissance.
12.15-1.00 Arrival at Parklands, 100 Banbury Rd OX2 6JU (01865 554374) or Linton Lodge, 11-13 Linton Rd OX2 6UJ (01865 553461). There is ample parking at both hotels.
